John Jeffress showed us his Blanket/Glory Box made from Tassie Oak.
He paid to have the panels made (not cheap) and the timber came from
Matthews Timber in Sydney. He acknowledged that he had help from
Charlie Kuhn to spay the lacquer and Dave Bear to turn the legs.
All up the project cost almost $1,000. John admits that the hardest part was
attaching the latch. Those brass screws are always a problem.
Graham’s Bowl
Graham Miller’s bowl, the inspiration for which came from a magazine
with a few minor changes. The slots were initially made on the lathe and
then carved to shape on both the inside and outside. The timber used was
green silky oak which was dried out in a microwave oven over a number
of weeks in short bursts. It was then returned to the lathe for final shaping.
It was sanded to 120 grit. Charlie Kuhn has agreed to spray it with sanding
sealer before it is finished off with Danish Oil.
Peters Jewel Box
Peter Thompson created the 8 sided box at left. It is made from Western Red Cedar and Murray River Gum
with the centre piece in the lid being made from flooring boards used in floating floors.
It is beautifully made, as we expect from Peter, and the sliding tray and bottom of the box are lined in blue.
The piano hinge sets it off. Peter confessed he didn’t make the handles.
Warren’s Music Stand
A music stand made by Warren Cannon for his daughter who plays the flute. The stand is made of New Zealand Rosewood
with the music rest of Myrtle Burl.
The stand was copied from a plan but the top section was of Warren’s own design.
It has adjustment to enable the stand to raised and lowered to suit his daughter’s sitting or standing positions.
The music rest can also be adjusted to several angles including a horizontal position if required.
Chris’s “Abstract Wave”
A carving from Chris Sturt. The creation is called an “Abstract Wave” and the concept was taken from a book.
The timber is Oregon, is finished with an Estapol Satin finish.
Chris has kindly donated it as a prize for use in a raffle conducted by the Tomaree Hospital later this year.
